We’re packing up our things again to head West this summer, but this time for good. It’s another season of transition for us: Last weekend I graduated with my master’s from the University of Texas. In a few short weeks, we’ll be based in Northern California, where Mindy will begin her PhD journey at UC-Berkeley and I’ll start out as an editorial fellow at Sierra Magazine. Davy will trade in rocky, cedar covered trails for something a little springier under her paws beneath the redwoods.
Bittersweet to leave behind our home in Austin. It’s been good to us — where we got married, started our careers and had a lot of beginnings. The last few weeks we have here will fly by, a good time for memories and reflection. But then it’ll be onward and westward.

I visited Bill Neiman recently to hear what he had to say about the Llano River. A mile of it flows through his land and irrigates his farm downstream from Junction, Texas.
Like a “mad farmer” in the Wendell Berry sense, he’s gone after unregulated mining operations, infrastructure development and, most recently, a Pilot Flying J truck stop that built its stormwater drainage flume right into a formerly pristine part of the river. Whether he wins his cases or loses, he doesn’t let development go unchecked.

World, meet Davy. She's a 4-year-old pointer and relatively new in town. Will accept treats and belly rubs as house-warming gifts.
